The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. IELTS is available in two formats namely Paper-based IELTS and Computer-based IELTS.

IELTS Exam Pattern

The IELTS test has two forms: the Academic test (or module) and the General Training test (or module). The module that you take depends on the reason that you are taking it for. Generally speaking, the Academic Module is for those people who are trying to gain entry onto undergraduate or postgraduate education courses or for professional reasons. The General Training Module is for those people who wish to join some kinds of vocational or training courses, secondary schools or for immigration purposes.

Both Academic and General Training modules try and reflect real life situations to test whether a candidate would survive in English speaking social and academic environments. For example, the Part 2 section of the speaking asks candidates to talk, after 1 minute’s preparation, for 1 to 2 minutes on a given general topic. This would test General Training candidates to see if they could give a “work related presentation” to fellow work colleagues and would test Academic candidates if they can give a “university style presentation” to fellow students. It tests whether candidates have the English language capability to perform these tasks under some kind of pressure.

IELTS Listening

  • The IELTS Listening module consists of four sections. In each section you will hear a recording of a monologue or conversation.

  • While listening, you have to answer ten questions, which can be multiple choice, short answer, or filling in the gaps in a sentence, diagram, or data table. There is additional time at the end of the test to write your final answers on the answer sheet.
  • The Listening module is the same in both the academic and general training versions of IELTS. The Listening module lasts around 35 minutes and is the first part of the test.

IELTS Reading

  • The three passages in the IELTS Reading module deal with a range of academic subjects: one may be about ancient history, another about astronomy, another about advertising techniques, and so on.
  • Each passage in IELTS Reading is followed by 11 to 15 questions. You can read and answer questions at the same time. The questions are multiple choice, matching, true/false/not given, sentence completion or summary completion tasks. Write your answers in pencil on the separate answer sheet provided. You can also make notes on the question sheet.
  • The IELTS Reading module lasts 60 minutes. You should be able to skim-read approximately 170 words per minute and spend no more than 15 minutes in total reading the three passages. That will leave you around one minute to attempt each question plus a little extra time for checking.

IELTS Writing

  • In IELTS writing there are 2 sections.
  • In academic you get  Bar graph or Picture depiction in task 1 and essay writing for task 2. Time duration is 1 hour.
  • In General module you get informal and formal letter writing task and essay writing in task 2. Time Duration is 1 hour.

IELTS sPEAKING

  • The examiner will first introduce her or him self with a brief introduction to the test and will confirm your identity. Then the examiner will initiate a general conversation by asking questions about yourself, family, your academic background, hobbies, weather etc.

  • Speak as much as possible – You’ve got 12 minutes to show how good your speaking is.
  • Don’t pre-learn your answers – These sound rehearsed and examiners will notice this and move on to a different topic.
  • Avoid yes/no answers – Always include details to fill out your answer.
  • Correct yourself if you make a mistake – This is what native speakers do and you won’t lose marks for it.
  • Make sure your intonation is not flat – English speakers have melody in their intonation. If the way you speak sounds flat, you will sound bored – the examiner might think that you are not interested or don’t care!
