The Pearson Test of English – Academic is an English language test designed to assess the readiness of non-native English speakers to participate in a university-level English language instruction program. Pearson created PTE Academic in response to demand from institutions, government and other organizations for a more accurate way of testing non-native English language students who enter the English-speaking academia world. PTE is accepted for student and immigration applications across the world.

What is PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is the first entirely computer-based English language test for international study and immigration that is accepted across the world. Powered by AI Artificial Intelligence, technology, PTE Academic provides a fast and convenient testing solution without human bias.

The test assesses the four skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. It lasts approximately 3 hours and provides a score based on the GSE Global Scale of English. PTE Academic scores are accepted by thousands of institutions and approved for UK, Australian and New Zealand student visa and immigration categories. 

Who can take the test?

  • Any study abroad aspirant, with minimum age of 16 years can take the PTE test.
  • Candidates below the age of 18 years are supposed to take parent’s/ guardian’s consent form signed.

MORE ABOUT THE TEST

To complete a PTE Academic test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test center. You will use a computer and a headset to listen to, read and respond to questions.

During the three-hour test session, there are three main parts to the test: Speaking and Writing together, Listening and Reading. There is also an optional 10-minute break between the reading and listening parts. During the test, you will find twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choice through to essay writing and interpreting information.

PTE Academic assesses real-life, academic English, so you will hear excerpts from lectures and view graphs and charts. You will hear a range of accents in the test, from British and American to non-native speakers, so you will be exposed to the type of accents you will encounter in everyday life.

Why PTE for Australia and New Zealand?

PTE Academic English test is accepted by Australia’s Department of Home Affairs DHA and Immigration New Zealand for all student and immigration visa applications.

Most Australian skill assessment authorities and professional registration bodies accept PTE viz. Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, AHPRA, Australian Nursing and Midwifery, Accreditation Council ANMAC, Certified Practising Accountant Australia CPA Australia, Chartered
Accountant Australia and New Zealand, Australian Computer Society and Engineers Australia.

All technological Institutions & Universities in Australia and New Zealand accept the PTE.

TAFE Technical And Further Education institutes and all Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics ITPs in New Zealand accept the PTE.

PTE Academic UKVI

PTE Academic UKVI is a Secure English Language Test SELT that is approved by the UK Home Office for all UK visas that require a 4 skill language test. It is a fast, fair and convenient choice for anyone who wishes to work, study or come to live in the UK.

There is no difference between PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI in terms of test content and format. Instead, there are minor differences in the registration process to comply with UK Home Office requirements.

Study Visas:

You should choose PTE Academic UKVI if:

  • You are applying for a General student visa Tier 4 and you are planning to study below degree level e.g. a Foundation or Pathways course or professional English course.
  • You wish to study at degree level or above somewhere that is not a Higher Education Institution HEI.

You may take PTE Academic instead, if:

  • You are applying for a General student visa Tier 4 and are planning to study at degree level or above. Please check with your Higher Education Institution HEI to confirm their specific English requirements.

Work Visas:

You should choose PTE Academic UKVI if you are applying for the following Work visas:

  • Start-up Visa
  • Innovator Visa
  • General Work Visa (Tier 2)
  • Minister of Religion Visa (Tier 2)

How will you be tested?

To take a PTE Home test you will need to attend a secure Pearson test center.

 

The PTE Home B1 test has 29-32 items and lasts up to 29 minutes.

PTE is available ONLY in computer based format.

A candidate can give multiple attempts for PTE test with a gap of five days after the previous exam.

There is no set good score. It solely depends on the requirements set by the institution that you are applying to. The range of PTE score is between 10 and 90 points.

Yes, PTE helps you secure all the categories of visas for Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

PTE is accepted in more than 50 countries across the globe. It is widely accepted in Australia, New Zealand & the UK and is also accepted by a handful institutions in the USA and Canada.

In order to book a test, a candidate has to create My PTE account and sign in to schedule the test online. They can also contact local test centres via phone.

The test scores are valid up to two years from the date of test and will not be visible in your account after that.

A candidate can send his/her scored to unlimited number of institutions without any charges.

Candidates who have appeared for PTE test can check their scores from the online account that they would have created at the time of PTE test registration.
